S.T.E.A.M. – The Five Disciplines

At Power and Grace Preparatory Academy (PGPA), we use a specific focus of education referred to as S.T.E.A.M learning. Every Friday from 1:30 to 2:45, we employ project-based learning that crosses each of the five disciplines of S.T.E.A.M.

“Some things will drop out of the public eye and go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always be mathematics.”

Katherine Johnson, Nasa Mathematician (As portrayed in the film Hidden Figures)

Navigating Everyday Challenges

Though education is an important part of a child’s growth and development and families strive every day to ensure they are helping promote learning for their children, at Power And Grace Preparatory Academy (PGPA), we use a specific focus of education referred to as S.T.E.A.M learning.

S.T.E.A.M learning is very important because these five disciplines are used in everyday activities. They promote problem-solving skills along with creative and analytical thinking. Many of the jobs that affect our economy include S.T.E.A.M subjects.

Accounting, architecture, medical research, and environmental studies all involve science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, S.T.E.A.M occupations have grown in the last ten years three times faster than non-S.T.E.A.M occupations and S.T.E.A.M occupations are expected to grow by 10% from now until 2020. Non-S.T.E.A.M occupations only grow at a national average of 5-8%.

For this reason, among others, it is never too early to begin introducing S.T.E.A.M learning to your child. Each discipline of S.T.E.A.M helps your child grow and navigate through everyday challenges.

Introducing S.T.E.A.M learning can begin simply by pointing out why and how things in our everyday lives work. For example, when something falls to the ground, explain to your child that the object fell due to gravity. Families can also try different activities at home that focus on these five disciplines.
